Divorce Lawyers

Going through a divorce can be an emotionally draining experience. It is understandable that during the divorce process many people find it hard to concentrate or focus on the task ahead. Your Divorce Lawyers will ask you to prepare and bring certain documents to your first meeting.

Its important that you come prepared when meeting with your Divorce Lawyers as it will save you both time and money. It is much better to bring too much information than not enough. The more information you can prepare the better your Divorce Lawyers will be able to evaluate and argue your case.

The types of documents that will be useful to your Divorce Lawyers include:

  • Documents relating to your income or your spouses income. This includes pay slips, tax statements, work contracts, pension or retirement account statements and bank statements.
  • Documents relating to your or your spouses expenses. This includes loan statements, mortgage documents, credit card bills, utility bills and any other regular outgoings.
  • A list of any assets or properties that you or your spouse held before you were married. If there was a prenuptial agreement protecting any of these assets you should bring this along too. This may help you Divorce Lawyers to protect assets that you accumulated pre-marriage. It will help if your property or assets have been recently valued and if they haven't then this may need to be arranged during divorce proceedings.
  • If you or your partner own a business then you should bring any documentation regarding the earnings, assets, expenses or insurances for that business.
  • Documents regarding health cover, life insurance or home insurance.
  • Your Divorce Lawyers will also need your will if you or your spouse has had one drawn up. They will be able to help you re-draw this document once the divorce has been finalized.

Your Divorce Lawyers will need to see your most recent documentation plus documents from the past 3 to 5 years if you have them. It is not necessary to bring documents for every year that you were married. Family lawyers can also mediate child custody agreements and child support.
