The term Esquire is sometimes used by law attorneys but it is not common. It is an appendage to the full name of the Attorney At Law , often abbreviated to Esq. It is now used as a professional title, similar to the use of Dr. or Ph.D. It is not likely that you will see this term commonly used today.
The terms barrister and solicitor are used frequently in the UK and they are two distinct branches of the legal system. A solicitor acts as an advocate for clients in the lower court. They interact with clients and prepare any legal documentation that may be needed. Alot of their timeis taken up with interacting with the client and researching the clients case.
Rather than hiring an Attorney At Law a commercial client is more likely to call in a solicitor to provide them with advice on tax, finance, property and litigation. Solicitors need good people skills to be able to communicate and interact with their clients.
Solicitors need a wide range of skills. As well as being able to communicate with clients and develop good working relationships with them, they need to be able to work closely with colleagues, pay close attention to detail and be willing to work long hours. They also need initiative and good judgment to work with complex information. A barrister on the other hand does not work with clients but instead performs trial work in the high court.
